The reproduction of a sculpture by José Capuz: technology and art in harmony

Francisco Piqueras
Reproducing a sculpture by José Capuz is a challenge that combines art and technology. In this case, it involves «"Our Lady of Mercy"», One of his most emblematic works, venerated during Holy Week in Cartagena. To achieve a faithful replica, we have collaborated with our colleagues at Dronic, who performed a high-precision 3D scan.
Then, our team took care of prepare the digital model, 3D print it in parts and assemble it, adding details and patinas to accurately reflect the essence of the original work.

A reproduction of a sculpture by José Capuz; a sculptural legacy
The sculptor José Capuz Mamano (1884-1964) He is one of the most prominent figures in religious sculpture in Spain. Born in Valencia, his artistic career evolved from modernism to a more classical and refined style, influenced by his time in Paris and his contact with the European sculptural movement of the period. Member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and his work combines great expressiveness with impeccable technique.
Sacred Art
Within her legacy, "The Virgin of Piety" occupies a special place. Created in 1925 for the Brotherhood of Jesus of Nazareth, It depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the lifeless body of Christ with great emotion. Its serenity, the treatment of the folds in her garments, and the delicacy of her features make it a masterpiece of religious sculpture. Every year, during Holy Week in Cartagena, the image is carried in procession. Holy Monday procession, attracting devotees and admirers of sacred art.

Collaboration with Drónica, innovation in 3D digitization
The reproduction of a sculpture José Capuz's work requires absolute precision to respect the essence of the original. For this, we rely on the experience of Dronic, Specialists in high-resolution 3D scanning. Their work consisted of capturing every detail, texture and volume of "The Virgin of Piety"«, using state-of-the-art equipment that allows for obtaining a digital replica with millimeter accuracy.
Point cloud scanning and optimization
3D scanning is a fundamental tool in the preservation and reproduction of artistic heritage, since It allows the generation of faithful three-dimensional models without altering the original work.. Thanks to this process, we obtained an optimized digital file that served as the basis for the next stage: converting the model into a design ready for 3D printing.

Reproduction process, from digital to tangible
Once the 3D model of «"Our Lady of Mercy"», The next step was to adapt this file for 3D printing. Due to the size and complexity of the sculpture, We divided the model into several sections, ensuring that each fragment maintained maximum resolution and fidelity to the original work.
High-precision 3D printing
For printing, we use high-precision technology capable of reproducing minute details such as the folds of the mantle, the Virgin's expression, and the surface texture. After printing, We assembled all the pieces with meticulous work. to avoid imperfections or visible differences in the joints.
Patinas
The final step was the surface finishing. Here we applied different restoration and patination techniques, achieving a final appearance as close as possible to that of the original sculpture. Every tone, shadow, and texture was carefully crafted so that the reproduction would capture not only the form, but also the soul of Capuz's work.

In conclusion, preserving art for future generations
Reproducing a sculpture by José Capuz is not just a technical exercise, but a way to preserve his legacy and bring it closer to new generations. Thanks to the combination of advanced technology and artisanal techniques, We managed to create a faithful replica of «"Our Lady of Mercy"», Respecting every detail of the original work, this project demonstrates that innovation and tradition can coexist, allowing artistic heritage to transcend time.
Furthermore, this initiative highlights the importance of 3D scanning and printing in art conservation. To be able to document and reproduce iconic sculpturesAccurate restoration opens up many opportunities for the restoration, the museography and the dissemination of cultural heritage.
At IA Manufacturing we are proud to have participated in this reproduction, collaborating with Dronic and contributing our experience in manufacturing and artistic finishes. We will continue to explore new ways to unite art and technology to continue preserving history.
