Topographic model of the Aragonese Pyrenees: interpreting the territory from the relief

Creating this topographic model of the Aragonese Pyrenees meant transferring a complex territory, full of reliefs, paths and natural enclaves that had to be clearly identifiable, to a surface of 2 × 0.9 meters.
The piece was created for the Pyrenean Glaciers Monument Interpretation Centre, Located in Eriste, this space is dedicated to explaining the glacial landscape, its formation, its conservation, and the effects that climate change is having on these formations.
Representing the territory without overwhelming it with information
In a model of this type, the relief had to coexist with a large amount of information without losing legibility. Therefore, in addition to reproduce the topography, We incorporated the network of trails and the various natural areas identified in the project, paying special attention to how each point of interest is identified. To achieve this, we created custom-made, proportionate, and discreet signage, capable of guiding visitors without obscuring mountains, valleys, or routes.
Each piece of information should help to read the territory, not visually compete with it. Thus, the model functions as an interpretive tool that allows one to understand at a glance how the relief, routes and protected areas of the Aragonese Pyrenees are related.

The creation of this topographic model of the Aragonese Pyrenees began with a very specific challenge: to translate a complex and information-rich high-mountain territory onto a flat surface. The relief had to be recognizable, but it also had to leave room to represent trails, natural areas, and various points of interest.
Thanks to this model, visitors can learn about the glacial landscape, its formation, and its state of conservation. The model was intended to help visitors understand the territory at a glance, before delving into the contents of the exhibition.
A visual reading that connects terrain, trails and natural spaces
In this type of work, reproducing the topography is only one part of the process. It's also necessary to ensure that all the added information is... In the model we incorporated the network of trails and the natural areas indicated in the project, seeking that each route could be followed without losing sight of the shape of the landscape.
The goal was for relief and information to function as a single interpretive tool. Thus, the visitor can locate different areas, understand how they connect and place them within the whole of the Aragonese Pyrenees.

Custom signage to locate each point without obscuring the relief
One of the most delicate aspects of this topographic model of the Aragonese Pyrenees was incorporating the necessary information without turning the surface into a collection of labels. The model represents the network of trails and various natural areas, so each reference had to be easy to locate while also respecting the natural contours of the land.
The signage had to guide the visitor without becoming the main focus of the piece. To achieve this, we designed custom elements with a contained scale and sufficient visual presence to identify each point of interest without hindering the overall view.
A visual hierarchy designed to explore the territory with your eyes
The position, size, and relationship of each sign to the terrain are integral to the model's composition. A sign that is too large can obscure a hillside; one that is too small loses its informative function. Therefore, the signage was conceived as a complementary layer to the relief and the represented routes.
Each element should appear exactly where the visitor needs it and visually disappear when they look at the whole again. This hierarchy allows you to explore the model with your eyes, locate paths and recognize the main natural areas without losing the feeling of contemplating a continuous territory.

From physical relief to a clear reading of the Pyrenean landscape
In a piece of this size, the balance between detail and clarity is fundamental. The model had to preserve the presence of mountains, valleys, and changes in elevation, but without this visual richness hindering the reading of the routes and points marked. Therefore, the design of the topographic model of the Aragonese Pyrenees focused on to establish a clear hierarchy between the relief itself and the information that should accompany it.
The territory had to remain the element that ordered the entire composition. In this way, the added elements help to interpret the surface without breaking the visual continuity of the landscape.

Each medium explains the territory from a different perspective, while the physical model allows visitors to pause, observe the whole, and return to a specific point as many times as necessary.
The model offers a global vision that complements the audiovisual content without competing with it. In a center dedicated to a landscape especially sensitive to the effects of climate change, this combination allows one to approach the territory from observation, information and spatial understanding.

A scale model to bring the Aragonese Pyrenees closer to the visitor
In creating this topographic model of the Aragonese Pyrenees, every decision had to be guided by the same principle: to facilitate understanding of the territory without losing the richness of the landscape. The relief, the routes, and the signage all had to work in a coordinated manner within a limited area.
A good museum model should select, order, and display information clearly. This balance allows the visitor to first observe the whole and then stop at paths, protected areas or specific points without losing their position within the territory.

Faced with a territory as vast as the Pyrenees, the scale model offers a perspective difficult to achieve from any other point of view. It allows you to discover the relationship between different areas, follow routes, and understand how the terrain influences how you move through this high mountain landscape.
Turning the territory into a three-dimensional piece helps to awaken curiosity even before visiting it. At the Eriste Interpretation Centre, the model thus becomes a meeting point between dissemination, orientation and observation, inviting the visitor to look more closely at the landscape they will find outside the museum.
